Kakaman Nduati: The Singing Cop Who Harmonizes Law Enforcement and Melodies

Isaac Kibugi Nduati, hailing from Kandara, Muranga, emerged in the 70s, but today, he's known as Kakaman Nduati, the melodious officer, or 'msikari mwimbi' in playful Swahili.

With 11 albums under his belt, Kakaman Nduati effortlessly balances his dual passions for law enforcement and music.

Early Years

Nduati's journey began early in life. While in Class 3 at Mahutia Primary School, he recognized his love for the arts, leading and participating actively in church, school, music, and drama festivals.

This talent was often likened to that of his grandfather, Kibugi, who had charmed audiences with his rendition of the traditional Kikuyu dance, 'Kibata.'

As a young student, Nduati was drawn to the music of Joseph Kamaru, especially 'Muhiki wa Mikosi' and DK Kamau.

By Class 7 in 1987, his talent was in full bloom, landing him at the provincial level in school music festivals.

His headmaster, Mr. Ngomi, encouraged his artistic pursuits. By Class 8, he was leading most festivals and even composed some pieces.

His talents extended into high school, where he became an influential figure in the arts scene.

High School Adventures

In his first year, Nduati delved into the arts, coaching seniors and helping them prepare for festivals.

His creative influence was evident as Kiruri High School advanced to the district level for the first time. In Form 2, he and his team swept district festivals, but their principal's disapproval led to a strike.

Despite the challenges, they secured second place at the provincial level with the help of an education officer.

The expulsion that followed turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Nduati's father was disappointed by the wasted fees, but Nduati was determined to continue his artistic journey.

He enrolled at Gituru High School due to its emphasis on performing arts. A former adjudicator, Mr. Omurunga, vouched for Nduati, leading to his admission in Form 3.

He quickly made his mark, winning awards and performing for Kenya's President Moi at State House Nairobi.

Life After School

After high school, Nduati returned to Gituru High School as an arts coach. He co-wrote a play titled 'Nguvu za Giza' that featured rising star Ann Ngugi.

In 1996, he joined the police force and attended Police College at Kiganjo. While on duty, his musical calling persisted, prompting him to sing songs by John Ndemethiu and Mugithi.

Musical Beginnings

Yearning to sing his own songs, Nduati released his debut album 'Cecilia' in 2006, which was a hit.

He followed up with albums like 'Kibaki Tena' and 'Muhunjia Opposite.' A road accident in 2009 led to the gospel album 'Massage ya Kiroho.'

Despite its lukewarm reception, it didn't deter him from pursuing music. His albums gained popularity, and he found success with titles like 'Afande inthe Box' and 'Konje Gakwa.'

The Journey Continues...

Nduati's journey has been one of creativity and commitment. His albums like 'Nyumba Ya Uthamaki' and 'Nani Yuko Salama' have resonated with audiences.

His 2019 release, Album 11, showcases 'Wendo wa Teargas,' a unique love story between a doctor and a police officer.

Nduati's compositions span various genres like Chakacha, Pop, and Lingala, all of which he guides his instrumentalists in executing.

Balancing Police Duty and Music

As a singing police officer, Nduati is grateful for the support he's received from his superiors. His boss at one time, Superintendent Joel Sang, would encourage his musical endeavors.

Despite earning more from music, Nduati remains a dedicated police officer and takes pride in the title of the "singing cop."

His flexible schedule allows him to perform in the evenings, and his shows are well-received by fellow officers.

Looking Ahead

Nduati's story is one of resilience and passion. He's open to international performances and has caught the attention of Radio Jambo Boston, a radio station in US targeting Kikuyus in diaspora.

As he continues to balance his roles, Nduati's journey as a cop with a musical soul captivates hearts across generations.
