IN BRIEF:
  • The situation on Ngong Road is a stark reminder of the potential dangers of protests and the need for both sides to engage in dialogue.
  • The resumption of protests by the Azimio Coalition underscores the urgent need for the government to address the underlying issues and to demonstrate its commitment to reforms.
  • It is only through dialogue and a willingness to work towards a common goal that a peaceful resolution can be achieved.
On Ngong Road, a passenger service bus was set on fire as anti-riot police officers and protesters clashed. In order to disperse the protestors, the police resorted to throwing teargas canisters.

The Azimio Coalition, which is protesting against high living costs and alleged election fraud, has resumed their demonstrations. The decision to resume protests was made after the government displayed a lack of commitment to talks.

Coalition Leader Raila Odinga had previously called off the nationwide demonstrations in early April, following an appeal from President William Ruto. At the time, Ruto had agreed to engage in talks and to reform the election commission.

The resumption of protests by the Azimio Coalition is a clear indication that the government has failed to uphold its end of the bargain.

The coalition had agreed to halt their demonstrations in good faith, based on the assurance that the government was committed to engaging in meaningful talks and reforms.

However, the lack of progress in talks has left the coalition with no other option but to resume their protests.

The situation on Ngong Road is just one of the many instances where the protests have turned violent. The burning of the passenger service bus is a tragic reminder of the potential dangers of such protests.

While the coalition has the right to peaceful demonstrations, the use of violence is unacceptable and only serves to undermine their cause.

It is important for both sides to come to the negotiating table and find a way to resolve the issues at hand. The government must demonstrate its commitment to reforms and to addressing the concerns of the Azimio Coalition.

At the same time, the coalition must be willing to engage in dialogue and to explore all possible avenues for finding a peaceful resolution.

The resumption of protests is a clear indication that the underlying issues have not been adequately addressed. The high living costs and alleged election fraud are serious concerns that require urgent attention.

It is incumbent upon the government to take swift action to address these issues and to restore public confidence in the electoral process.
