Meet the First Ever Kenyan Senator who Opted to go South

Kenyan Senator turn MCA

The game of politics usually involves aspiring for a higher position than the one you are presently in. No one can ever imagine that their current governor, senator, or Member of Parliament could be eyeing for a 'colorless' position like that of an MCA.

Senators, governors, and MPs are expected to either vie for the same positions or upgrade to higher positions.

However, in March 2017, senator Godliver Omondi broke the record. She decided to downgrade and vie for the position of member of county assembly for Kholera Ward, Kakamega county, leaving many people questioning how a person could give up a senatorial seat to compete for a minor looking seat.

Before then, she had been serving people with disabilities as a nominated senator nominated by the National Super Alliance (NASA). While in the house, she served in the Health, Library, and Broadcasting and National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities Committees.

Why she decided to Downgrade

In an interview with the standard, Godliver disclosed that she needed to become an MCA to have a deeper connection with the common mwananchi. She felt that when she was at the top, she wasn't able to meet and interact with people as much as she desired.

"I would rather serve from the county's kitchen where the cooking is done than at the top because I would get to interact with the people at a very deeper level. I have always yearned to work at the village level where you meet people easily," she said.

Fortunately, her dream came to pass when she garnered 3,657 votes, emerging the winner of the seat that had been eyed by 5 others.

Due to her passion to serve the disabled, Hon Godliver fights for the rights of the disabled while serving as the patron of United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK).
