Vocal member of Mombasa County Assembly, Mohammed Hatimy, is dead.

The outspoken MCA allegedly succumbed to Covid-19 related complications on Saturday morning, Mombasa County Assembly Speaker Ibrahim Khatri reported.

“He passed on at 3am. He was suffering from lung infection,” Khatri told Capital News, adding Hatimy had been at Mombasa Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for some days.

The deceased was among 7 MCAs who tested positive for Coronavirus late last month leading to the temporary closure of the assembly.

Hatimy was serving as nominated MCA for a second term courtesy of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. In the assembly, he was the Finance Committee chair.

He was also the Mombasa County chairman of ODM, the party which is led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In its official Twitter account, the Orange party expressed its regrets over Hatimy's death and described him as a beautiful soul, great man and a good leader.

"A beautiful soul has stopped beating. A great man has fallen. The ODM family has lost a good man and leader. Hon. Mohamed Hatimy, our Mombasa County Chairman and a second term nominated MCA in the County Assembly of Mombasa is dead. We shall miss you kiongozi," read the post.

The deceased wife, Dr. Khadija Shikelly, is the Mombasa County Medical Services Chief Officer.

Hatimy was a close ally and advisor of Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho. Before venturing into politics he served as the chairman of the defunct Kenya Football Federation (KFF).
