Why Mt Kenya's 'Dancing Monkeys' Remain Ruto's Biggest Headache as 2022 Edges Closer

Late last month after the now almost-ended ruthless purge by President Uhuru Kenyatta who was seeking to wrestle control of Jubilee Party and Parliament from his deputy William Ruto, the latter would seem to resign to fate to perhaps wait and see what it holds for him.

By Ndung'u Wa Gathua

Ruto, who had 16 MPs allied to him axed recently from the leadership of key House committees, took to Twitter to urge his footsoldiers to 'accept and move on' while quoting a Biblical verse to take his message home.

"With the changes in Parliamentary leadership including committee membership & leadership now concluded, I urge all MPs NOT to be divided but work TOGETHER in serving the PEOPLE. Col.3:23, Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for God, not human masters," reads Ruto's tweet.

Of course we can all tell who those 'human masters' are that the DP was referring to when he alluded to the Biblical verse.

Interestingly, Ruto seems to have only quoted the verse that best fits his situation as the previous verse (Colossians 3:22) does encourage obedience to the same 'human masters'.

"Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything you do. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. Serve them sincerely because of your reverent fear of the Lord," reads Colossians 3:22.

Never mind, a Kenyan politician just like the Devil who can quote the Scripture to justify his cause, can say or do anything to validate his situation or vindicate himself from the same.

That said, it is worth noting that Ruto has seemingly since come to terms with his boss's actions of the last few months and whose root source can be traced to the now famous and infamous (depending on which side you sit) March 9, 2018 handshake between Uhuru and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Consequently, Ruto must undoubtedly be preparing for a very likely scenario where come 2022 he will be vying for the presidency with no blessings and backing of his boss. Should it come to pass, it will be against the 'wangojee nimalize yangu kumi naye Ruto amalize yake kumi' declaration.

But remember it is said, 'actions speak louder than words' and so far, there are no actions by the owner of the Swahili statement that gives it weight. Actually, what we have been witnessing are counteractions which leaves the statement to be nothing else but utter balderdash or idle street talk!

But even struck with this harsh reality, Ruto continues soldiering on alone and unperturbed towards the finishing line apparently emboldened by his battalion of loyalist footsoldiers who include but not limited to, a sizeable number from Mt Kenya region, the home turf of his boss. This is by all means a promising starting point considering the region is very vote-rich.

However, not all that glitters is gold. This massive Mt Kenya region support that Ruto seems to enjoy now, as 2022 edges closer, might rudely turn out to have all along been an illusion; an inflated balloon that is too big but nothing inside, very heavy in appearance but in reality very light!

In fact, Ruto should do his 2022 calculations without factoring in this region's support which since time immemorial is notoriously known for only supporting one of their own when it comes to the top seat. Truth be told!

The rebelliousness that you witness now against the region's kingpin, President Uhuru, could be shortlived as the latter moves in to reclaim his lost glory. Already Uhuru is vigorously addressing some array of issues that had put a wedge between him and the region's residents.

Therefore, it could just be a matter of time before he wins back the lost love leaving Ruto again hanging at the periphery.

For avoidance of doubt, I can dare predict that as 2022 draws closer, Mt Kenya electorates' basic nature as regards to their presidential choice, will ultimately betray itself as the cock retreat home to roost.

This is why Ruto must be very wary of Mt Kenya region 'dancing monkeys' lest he will have himself to blame after the 'dancing monkeys' drop their pretence.

The Dancing Monkeys

A story is told of a prince who trains a troop of dancing monkeys to perform at the royal court and arrays them in rich clothes and masks.

However, a courtier disrupts their human pretence by scattering nuts on the stage, for which the monkeys almost break their limps scrambling for.

Sir Roger L'Estrange, a 17th century English author, commenting on the fable story observes: "It is not in the power of study and discipline to extinguish natural inclinations. Ape is always ape, even when taught to dance".

I end my case there with the hope that time and events will come and prove me to have been very wrong, very wrong indeed!
