#13YEARSAGO: Mwagu Secondary School Memories, Class 2007 - Benson Kimani

Expelled from Makwa High School in Gatundu North because of high-headedness, Benson Kimani alias Nyambura would join us in 2005 while in Form 2 and try to inculcate into us the immoral culture that made him to be knocked out of his former school.

Kimani who is now a maniac driver plying along Thika Road albeit compliant with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) regulations, would upon joining us at Mwagu Secondary School, not simply fathom why 'circumcised' men could get caned by any teacher regardless of the offence in question.

In fact, he used to make us feel like 'boys' by his blatant rhetoric until a ripe opportunity came knocking and we realized he was just like us; much weaker actually!

It was right at the staffroom door when all boys in our class were summoned by the principal, Mr Muhura, to show cause why they would not be sent home after Kimani had a day earlier convinced them to go to Gatakaini forest to hunt and eat monkeys.

I was the only one who had not gone for that useless expedition championed by Benson and you can guess why. If you conclude that I was an ass, that is your problem. I had my own reasons for not being part of that mission.

Back to the staffroom door, Nyambura would even before explaining anything about his unsanctioned jungle-led tour get an electric slap for not tacking in his shirt. We were all expecting a kind of a 'nuclear showdown' between the principal and the self-imposed 'Mr Fearless' going by what he had lied to us before about not taking 'shit' from any teacher.

We were actually waiting for him to melt down from that slap, crystalize and then sublime and immediately send Muhura to the deepest part of hell. It never happened! The guy was a coward. A big one!

From that moment, the only thing we could believe from him was his regular rainy seasons absentism. Yes, because the Chania River log bridge he was using alongside other Mataara colleagues would be swept downstream, to his joy.

The guy was very bright, the reason he was among the 'Big Five' who were rewarded during the Mwagu Secondary School (June, 2008) Prize Giving Day after we had hung our high school boots on November 10, 2007.

Benson Kimani, here is a memory of  what you wrote on my farewell book 13 years ago. You are a GREAT guy. I respect you and wish you all the best in your daily endeavours. If you are able to read through the chicken-like handwriting, please let us know what you have gathered from it.
